Glastir & Sustainable Production Grants Open

information for wales rural businesses

Two important grants have windows open currently for Welsh farmers and landowners.

These two grant are to help lock in carbon through hedge laying, fencing and wooden gating and to help farmers reach compliance with new water regulations – now Wales is being introduced as a nitrate vulnerable zone; with funding for necessary equipment.

Glastir Small Grants Carbon

The expression of interest window is now open for ‘Glastir small grants carbon’, and the closing date is 19 February 2021.

Glastir Small Grants is a programme of capital works available to farming businesses across Wales to carry out projects that help to lock up carbon (sequestration) and include funding for things like new hedge planting, post and wire fencing and hardwood timber field gates.

Hedgerows are highly valued for stock management, providing shelter for livestock and reducing animal disease spread, but also to lock in carbon. Increasing hedgerows will help combat climate change by taking greenhouse gasses out of the atmosphere through carbon storage in biomass. This has positive effects on soil, air and water quality as well as biodiversity.

Sustainable Production Grant

The window for expression of interest for a ‘Sustainable Production Grant’ is open until 12 March 2021 (opened 1st Feb).

With the announcement of a nitrate vulnerable zone (NVZ) being introduced across the whole of Wales, the capital works in this grant could be essential on some farms, to bring them up to being compliant. The grant is available for all farmers, who meet requirements of The Water Resources Regulations 2020.

The grant provides a maximum 40% contribution towards capital investments in equipment and machinery to support farmers in addressing nutrient management, and safeguarding and improving water, soil and air quality, by reducing pollution.

  • maximum grant award is £50,000
  • minimum grant award is £12,000

The maximum project cost to receive a 40% grant contribution is £125,000. An EOI may exceed the maximum project cost by adding a single item. If selected, the related claim is capped to the maximum £50,000 grant.
