Client Stories: Gwenyn Gruffydd Honey
Interview with Angharad Rees of Gwenyn Gruffydd.
We caught up with client Angharad Rees of Gwenyn Gruffydd to find out how LHP helped them to thrive, adapt and grow and to learn why they awarded LHP a massive 5 out of 5 for support and service.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how your business came about.
Gwenyn Gruffydd was founded in 2010 when my husband Gruffydd decided to follow his dream of becoming a beekeeper at the age of 23. He was given his first two hives by a local farmer and fast forward 11 years now as a team, and we manage over 140 beehives across Carmarthenshire as well as supporting other beekeeping families by giving them a market for their Welsh wildflower honey.
Gruffydd studied countryside management in Aberystwyth and he always wanted to farm. In 2015 Gruffydd and I purchased a small farm in Dryslwyn and decided to turn our beekeeping hobby into a business with very small ambitions of supplying the odd local village shop.
After a lot of valuable guidance, inspiration and advice from LHP and others, our ambitions for the business changed massively and today we sell thousands of honey jars and beeswax candles through our website and online marketplaces, and thousands of jars through our wholesalers which include cafes, delis, restaurants, farm shops and other hospitality businesses. In 2021 we started offering beekeeping training, (bees and beekeeping equipment) as a new element to the business; providing ‘the full package’ to our next generation of beekeepers.
What problem were you trying to solve when you met LHP?
We approached LHP 6 years ago, looking for an accountant who could help us turn our (then) beekeeping hobby into a beekeeping business. We needed to take the business to the next level and free up time in the business to focus on growing it and not running the finances and payroll.
Things were becoming more complex such as the need to incorporate and wanting a real-time view of the business, plus we didn’t have knowledge of current laws and regulations such as exporting.
Why did you choose LHP?
We approached LHP in 2015 after a word-of-mouth recommendation and stated what our intentions were. From the moment we had our first meeting, we felt at ease, and comfortable and confident that LHP were the right company to help guide and support us on our little journey.
What benefits have you enjoyed since?
As the business grew over the years, needs changed and became more complex. Gwenyn Gruffydd became limited as a company and LHP assisted tremendously with this transition and guided us all the way.
The support and advice from LHP over the years has been invaluable. They’ve held our hand along the journey, giving us all the business support we need every step of the way.
Staff are always up to date with current laws and regulations. Post Brexit trading for example has been (and continues to be) baffling and a bit of a headache, but the team advises and guides us on the import and export side of things really well.
We are encouraged to pick up the phone to talk through any issues or questions and they’re always prepared to go that extra mile, even when we might leave some things to the last minute. A big shout out to Sam Hart who has worked incredibly hard on our accounts! Being able to access services bilingually is also important to us.
Without a doubt, Janet Collins and her team has helped our small business grow year on year. As experts in cloud accounting they introduced us to Xero and continue to be there for us on a daily basis. They continue to take care of all of our accountancy requirements including tax and payroll.
Fast forward to 2021 and our micro business has really grown and sees us sending honey and beekeeping equipment right across the UK (and beyond) and we look forward to what the future has in store for Gwenyn Gruffydd. I’m confident LHP will be there for us as we continue on our journey.
