Wales Business Rates Discount Extends to 2022

Scenario Planning

Good news for Welsh businesses in hospitality, tourism and leisure on the matter of business rates, with a full extension of the discount until April 2022 announced by Welsh Government.

HTL sector businesses in Wales – that’s the Hospitality, Retail and Leisure ones – don’t have to pay business rates until April 2022. Despite announcing in March 2021 that the rates relief holiday would reduce on June 30 (66% discount instead of 100%), Welsh Government has instead extended the full 100% discount for all businesses and charities in the HTL sector until April 2022.

This comes as welcome news for Welsh businesses at a time when England just ended their business rate support programme (July onwards). Retailers in properties with (up to) £500k rateable value will also continue to receive full business rates discounts for the rest of the year.

The extended discount was all made possible by the new £380m package for SMEs in Wales struggling to cope with impacts of the pandemic and will help see them through this challenging time.

This announcement coincides with further help available for Wales’ businesses, with additional £1k-£25k grants for eligible business still significantly impacted by Covid.
