Client Stories: Pembrokeshire Gin!
Interview with Charlotte Clark, Founder of Pembrokeshire Gin Co.
Charlotte Clark, founder of Pembrokeshire Gin Co, shares her inspiring business journey with us, from founding the business to becoming an established award-winning brand.
Tell us about Pembrokeshire Gin and yourself
Tenby has been my home since I was a youngster. After spending weekends here growing up, my parents owned a caravan at Lydstep Beach, it made sense to make Tenby our home.
I didn’t set out to be an entrepreneur it just kind of happened. Both my parents were self-employed and worked very hard, instilling a work ethic in me. And with running my own business, I knew it would allow me quality time with my 3 young children.
We set up Pembrokeshire Gin Co. in 2018 after 6 years of owning and running a specialty spirits shop in Tenby The Cranny. It seemed the natural next step to take, producing our own gin. We took the opportunity in February 2021 to commit full time to the venture – we were multi award-winning by this point, things were taking off.
Pembrokeshire Gin Co. is a premium gin brand evoking local flavours and coastal memories of the famous Lifeboat Station and HMS Tenby, a naval frigate named after our town. We sell to the UK via our web shop and wholesalers Master of Malt (England) and Select Drams (Scotland), plus hand selected stockists.
Our gins have their roots planted firmly in Wales and use locally sourced botanicals wherever possible. We even have a Welsh cake variety! Rosemary and Citrus Tenby Dry was named ‘Best in Wales 2020′ and won gold in Gin Masters 2021 (global). As did Welsh Cake Gin (another gin won on strength). As the first Welsh gin company to bag a gold medal for all its gins in one competition we were amazed! We also won 2 Great Taste Awards in 2021, our first was in 2020.
We opened Pembrokeshire Gin Shop, a small orange-fronted shop in Cobra house on Upper Frog Street Tenby early this year. It felt right for people to be able to explore our range of gins in person. And we invested in TV ads, (as pictured below)!
How has LHP helped, what are the benefits?
When we approached LHP nearly a decade ago now (2013) we needed help opening our first business. We were facing many challenges. How to incorporate, managing staff payroll, handling accounts and tax matters. We needed to free up time and go to the next level. Since day 1 LHP has been there for us as part of the team.
I think the biggest benefit since joining LHP has been being able to pick up the phone and ask questions. Also freeing up time. We employ full time staff and LHP do all of our payroll processing which helps us hugely – to concentrate on other needs of the business.
Xero accounting software has been great. It allows LHP access to the wholesale side of the business; great for processing our VAT returns and invoicing customers as we go along, instead of work piling up.
LHP Tenby has been nothing but hugely supportive; Practice Manager Amanda Cunningham, Ops Manager Michelle Reynolds and the wider team. Their staff are also loyal customers of our gin!
How would you describe LHP in 3 words?
If I were to describe LHP in 3 words it would be patient, professional and helpful. Patient, especially in the summer months when we are crazy busy but still have accounting deadlines to hit. Professional, because they always offer me the best advice, guiding on all aspects of business growth. Helpful, as there are so many aspects to the business I couldn’t have mastered without their help. Thank you LHP!
