Meet Payroll – Kay Augustus

Kay Augustus

It’s National Payroll Week! Let’s meet the faces behind the figures!

Managing payroll can be time-consuming, complicated, expensive and take time away from the business. To celebrate all the hard work done by our payroll team during a challenging year, we’re running a series of ‘meet the payroll team’ posts. Meet Kay Augustus, Head of Payroll at LHP.

What’s your role at LHP?

As payroll manager I lead our team – there’s myself, Angharad, Teleri and Nerys. It’s busy and varied, especially since Covid and we manage payroll, RTI and pensions. It’s been challenging this year with changing legislation on furlough, Covid-SSP, redundancies, flexible furlough and furlough extensions. We rose to the challenge, supporting 500+ payroll clients and running 51,000 payslips across the year.

Talk us through your career in payroll

Over the years I’ve set up company systems and end-end workflows for payroll and HR departments for them to run smoothly – but my payroll journey began over 20 years ago, in my first job as an admin assistant in a sweet packing company.

I was studying payroll at night school (AAT Payroll, SAGE Computerised, Manual Payroll) which qualified me for the world of payroll agency work. During this time in agencies I worked closely with HR and Accounts teams and did an AAT Foundation in Accounts which was useful, but only confirmed my heart was in payroll.

Fast-forward 20 years and I joined LHP – at the exact moment the world of payroll as we knew it burst (Feb 2020). Work became about furlough and Covid SSPs. We got through it with our clients. It was a challenging time. I’m currently completing my payroll degree (CIPP Payroll Management) and hope to graduate next year.

What’s your favourite bit of payroll?

My favourite part of payroll is the legislation. That might sound crazy (you would be right), it’s a minefield! A CIPP Tutor once told me there are over 190 pieces of legislation to consider when you run each payroll! Payroll is about linking information together and knowing the impact one change can make. If I make this change, how will it affect this, this and this? Everything we process links to HMRC, which affects employee benefits, tax credits, pensions credits and so on. We have to do our best to process everything on time and correctly!

Random facts about you

In my spare time I’m an award-winning cake baker and sugar artist. I bagged 2 Golds and a Silver in ‘Cake International‘ (considered the Oscars of Sugar Artistry and Bakery). I applied to Great British Bake Off, a dream of mine, but was told I was too good. I also love adventures in the family VW Camper with the kids and dogs.
